Why an expedition?

An expedition is a long journey undertaken by people for a specific scientific or research purpose.

We’ll be traveling to explore Samtskhe-Javakheti, a region of Georgia rich in volcanoes and volcanic rocks.

Our goals will be to explore these features and investigate what minerals we can find, as well as other geologically interesting sites.

Another research goal is to observe migratory birds. We’ll spend quite a bit of time birdwatching, since we’re traveling during their migration season. We expect to see plenty of birds.

The perfect trip for nature lovers
We'll be joined by our guide, Alina, a biologist by profession and a naturalist by calling.
Over the course of three days, we'll:
  • Let's look for obsidian, pumice, and volcanic bombs
Let's stop by a secret mineral deposit
  • Let's go see some rare birds
pink and curly pelicans, white and black storks, horned larks, all kinds of shorebirds, and even turpans. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded in the region; we hope we’ll be lucky enough to see the most impressive ones
  • We'll go for a walk among volcanoes and lava
All around us are giants that once spewed rivers of fire and are now frozen in time. We won’t just admire them from a distance—we’ll follow in their footsteps, walking across the solidified lava that once flowed, shaping these rugged, primeval landscapes.
  • We will visit four lakes located 2,000 meters above sea level
Unique volcanic lakes await us—their waters were formed when lava flows blocked the path of rivers. It will be a true journey through millions of years of the planet’s history, amid black basalt, craters, and stone waves!
program
Day One: Goderdzi Pass, the Petrified Forest
We’ll leave Batumi at 8–9 a.m. The return route goes through the Goderdzi Pass.
First of all, it’s absolutely beautiful: little houses on the slopes of alpine meadows, small beech groves, and wide-open spaces!
Second, there’s the petrified forest. Along the way, we’ll stop to admire the petrified tree trunks that are 6–14 million years old!
We’ll have a delicious lunch of kish on the road and drink fragrant herbal tea.

Our next stop is a fascinating mineral formation. We’ll try our luck and see if we can find some beautiful crystals. We might be lucky enough to spot some Caucasian agamas basking on the rocks.

We’ll drive through an incredibly beautiful canyon where the Vardzia Fortress is located.
Those who wish can take a walk through part of the fortress (admission is 15 lari and is not included in the tour price; time is limited to 1 hour). And those who have already been to the fortress can join us on a short walk through the surrounding area—it’s interesting there, too!
On this day, we’ll make a brief stop along the way at the fortresses of Khertvisi and Rabat.

We’ll arrive at the hotel, where a delicious dinner (paid separately) and a nature lecture by Alina await us.
Day Two: Birdwatching at Three Lakes
We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and head to the lake to watch pelicans, and we’ll also see other waterbirds.
We’ll learn the basics of birdwatching. And those who are already experienced will add new species to their lists and take some great photos.
We’ll have a camera with a telephoto lens for identifying birds. And you can rent binoculars from our rental service.

Together, we’ll keep a field journal, recording our observations like real scientists. This is a unique opportunity to experience wildlife with professional guidance and in-depth knowledge.

We’ll stop by Lake Sagamo and have lunch there with a great view of the lake. And, of course, we’ll watch the birds.

On this day, we’ll also travel to Lake Paravani, the largest lake in Georgia by area. We’ll explore the birdlife there again. Then we’ll head toward a village with the amusing name “Poka.”
Day Two: Searching for Volcanic Rocks
Let’s go on a short hike to look for obsidian and volcanic bombs. Our naturalist guide will tell us about the geology of Georgia in general and this region in particular. He’ll teach us how to tell rocks apart from minerals.

Total distance: 5 km.
Elevation gain: 250 m.
Evening and Overnight Stay on the Second Day
We're heading back to the same hotel to spend the night.
We'll have dinner, hang out, play a board game about birds if we have time, and then go to bed.
Day Three: Lake Tabatsukuri
In the morning after breakfast, we’ll head toward Lake Tabatskuri.
There’s a nature reserve here, and it’s the only nesting site for turpan ducks (birds of the duck family) in Georgia.

We’ll watch the waterfowl and then continue on our way home.

We’ll have lunch at a café. We’ll have dinner at a food court along the way.
We’ll return to Batumi around 9 p.m.
Our itinerary has been carefully planned down to the last detail, but nature has its own way of things. Some parts of the route may be rearranged depending on the weather and other factors—so that each destination is revealed to us in the best possible light.

This flexibility allows us to make the trip even more comfortable and enriching!

Level 2 difficulty—what does that mean?

You can tackle these trails even without hiking experience, but you need to be in good shape. The trail typicallyinvolves up to 500 m of elevation gain and is about 12 km long.

If you're still not sure whether this itinerary is right for you, feel free to email us :)

The scale is relative; use the distance and elevation gain as a guide.

A geographer by education, a photographer at heart, a guide by calling. A geography teacher who ran away from class to the Far Eastern taiga to be with the bears—and ended up staying there :)

She loves trails with views, people with a sparkle in their eyes, and photos that capture the essence of the moment.
“Hiking with me is warm, peaceful, and always authentic 🤍”
  • Alex
    Water Sports Instructor, Tour Guide
He has 20 years of hiking experience under his belt (not counting the backpack itself), including Category 5 water routes.
He believes that travel isn’t about the kilometers, but about the experiences, which is why he even chooses places to stop for a bite to eat where the view is just as enjoyable as the food.
  • Fyodor
    Escort
He went on his first hike at age 11—with a cotton-padded sleeping bag and his grandmother’s sweater.
He has experience with winter, water, and mountain hikes of varying difficulty levels. He loves wild trails, swamps, rhododendron thickets, spending the night in a snow den, trail races, boxing, and swimming in icy water.
On hikes, he values good spirits, the beauty of the wilderness, humor, pushing his limits, and hot tea after a long day of hiking.
  • Masha
    Escort
A child of the plains and marshes, I’ve dreamed of living in the mountains since I was little and used to imagine that the clouds on the horizon were snow-capped peaks.
I’m thrilled by every little spider and leaf, and I try to share that excitement with those around me. For me, nature is my natural habitat :)
I can turn even the most boring walk into an adventure.
“Wait, let me take a picture”—that’s my life motto; I capture all the coolest moments through my lens.
