There are nights that are truly worth traveling far away from the city for—nights we look forward to all year long.

We’ll head to Gomis Mta, at an elevation of over 2,000 meters, where the mountains often rise above the clouds, the sunsets and sunrises are otherworldly, and at night the sky seems much closer than usual. We’ll venture further away from the village, to a place where there are no tourists, to enjoy the silence of the night under the stars.

The main reason for this trip is the Perseid meteor shower. These are the very “shooting stars” that you can finally see with your own eyes—lying in the mountains with a cup of hot cocoa in your hands, sitting by the campfire, and gazing up at the truly dark mountain sky.

Alina
travel planner, nature enthusiast, and astronomy lover

Our naturalist will lead an astronomy tour: he’ll point out the constellations, explain where meteors come from, teach you how to navigate the night sky, share the legends associated with the stars, and help you observe planets, star clusters, and other fascinating celestial objects through a telescope.

And during the day, the mountains await us: a sea of clouds at sunset, views of the Main Caucasus Range, and on the second day—a hike to Lake Chinchau, alpine flowers, and more Tour Leaderd tours led by a naturalist, mountain scenery, and, if we’re lucky, newts in the lake.

You can spend the night in a tent, or you can choose a cabin. That’s why this trip is perfect for both camping enthusiasts and those who love the mountains but aren’t fans of tents.

program
Day One: Hiking
We arrive in Gomis Mta, but of course we head further on, to a place where there’s no one around. We set up camp or check into cabins—depending on the type of lodging we’ve chosen. We all gather together and wait for sunset.

Gomis Mta is famous for its sea of clouds: sometimes the clouds lie right at our feet, and above them the Main Caucasus Range comes into view. On a clear day, you can even see Mount Elbrus.

Of course, the sea of clouds doesn’t appear on schedule, but we’re often lucky!
The evening of the first day. Astrotour
When it gets dark, the main part of the journey will begin.
We’ll settle down under the open sky, drink hot cocoa, warm ourselves by the campfire, and look up at the sky. This is when the Perseid meteor shower is active—one of the most beautiful and famous showers of the year.
If you’ve never seen shooting “stars,” you’ll have a very good chance of catching your first glimpse right here in the mountains, far from city lights, at an altitude of over 2,000 meters.
Our naturalist will explain what meteors are, why they appear every year, how to tell a planet from a star, where to find the major constellations, and what stories people have made up about the night sky over the centuries.
We’ll also look through a telescope: we’ll search for planets, star clusters, and other objects that are impossible to see clearly from the city.
Get your wishes ready—the main thing is to make sure you make them in time.
Day Two. Breakfast

We'll make the morning after our nighttime observations as cozy as possible.

This time, breakfast won't just be plain old camping oatmeal. We've decided to treat ourselves—and you—to croissants, fresh coffee, and a peaceful morning in nature.

We have breakfast in a clearing, watch the mountains wake up, and take our time—no more than necessary.

Day Two: Hike to Lake Chinchiao
After breakfast, we’ll set out on a hike to Lake Chinchão.
Along the way, we’ll observe alpine plants, look for insects, talk about mountain nature, and, if we’re lucky, spot some newts in the lake.
The route is beautiful and full of life, and on hikes with Alina, we always notice things we’d usually walk right past.
Distance: about 15 km.
Elevation gain: about 600 m.

If you’d prefer a more relaxed pace, you can skip the hike and stay at camp to rest.

We’ll have lunch at a beautiful spot: we’ll prepare some freeze-dried meals, make herbal tea, and spend a little more time in the mountains before heading back.

We’ll return to Batumi in the evening, around 8:00 p.m.
Our itinerary has been carefully planned down to the last detail, but nature has its own way of things. Some parts of the route may be rearranged depending on the weather and other factors—so that each destination is revealed to us in the best possible light.

This flexibility allows us to make the trip even more comfortable and enriching!
Gomis Mta is a well-known destination—
but on this trip, it’s not just about the location. We’ve put together a true astronomy adventure and planned your entire weekend around the rare nights of Perseid meteor shower activity. We’ve created a unique trip—one we’ve been running for the fourth year in a row—only now in a new location, but still featuring a telescope, stories, delicious food, and a Tour Leader who knows how to bring the sky to life—so that afterward, you’ll want to keep looking up for a long time to come.

We’ve already taken care of everything that usually drains your energy: how to get there, where to stay, what time to catch the sunset, the best spots to watch the meteors, how to stay warm at night, what to eat, and where to go in the morning. All you have to do is arrive, get comfortable, and enjoy these two days: learn new things, gaze at the mountains, catch shooting stars, drink hot cocoa by the campfire, and not worry about a single logistical detail.

Level 1 difficulty—what does that mean?

We’ve set two difficulty levels for this tour, since you can choose not to go on the second day’s hike and instead stay at camp or near the car to rest and wait for the group. If you choose this option, you won’t need any special physical preparation. If you’re going on the second day’s hike, see below:

The scale is relative; use the distance and elevation gain as a Tour Leader.

Level 2 difficulty—what does that mean?

You can tackle these trails even without hiking experience, but you need to be in good shape. The trail typicallyinvolves up to 500 m of elevation gain and is about 12 km long.

If you're still not sure whether this itinerary is right for you, feel free to email us :)

Our Tour Leaders

We're beads and seals :3
  • Alina
    Founder of t&H, Tour Leader
A biologist by education, a naturalist by calling. She’s great at organizing everyone and getting them excited about adventures.

She makes the most delicious camping oatmeal and tells stories about all kinds of plants, rocks, clouds, bugs, spiders, and birds. She loves seeing the spark of curiosity in people’s eyes and giving hugs.
  • Artem
    Founder of t&H, Tour Leader
The best driver in Georgia, according to our tourists. He loves exploring life and new routes, and hiking high up in the mountains (and he’ll drag you along with him).
  • Natasha
    Tour Leader
    Hiking instructor.
A fan of mountain and ski trips. She loves to hike long distances, run, explore new places, and take beautiful photos.
  • Yaroslav
Tour Leader driver on some itineraries
An avid traveler, rescue worker, and avalanche safety engineer, he has worked as a mountain Tour Leader in the Khibiny Mountains and is currently working in Svaneti and Megrelia. He enjoys playing the guitar and singing.
  • Vova
Tour Leader driver on some itineraries
He’s been hiking since he was 15.
He loves nature and the mountains, both new and old trails, sitting by the campfire at night, and sleeping in the mornings :)
He used to be a Tour Leader on water-based expeditions; now he’s into professional mountaineering and arboriculture, and leads you on trails.
  • Anya
    Tour Leader
A geographer by education, a photographer at heart, and Tour Leader calling. A geography teacher who ran away from class to the Far Eastern taiga to be with the bears—and ended up staying there :)
On a hike, she knows two main secrets: how to find a beautiful view and how not to lose yourself during a rest stop.
She loves trails with views, people with a sparkle in their eyes, and photos that capture the essence of the moment.
“On a hike with me, it’s warm, peaceful, and always authentic 🤍”
  • Fyodor
    Tour Leader
He went on his first hike at age 11—with a cotton-padded sleeping bag and his grandmother’s sweater.
He has experience with winter, water, and mountain hikes of varying difficulty levels. He loves wild trails, swamps, rhododendron thickets, spending the night in a snow den, trail races, boxing, and swimming in icy water.
On hikes, he values good spirits, the beauty of the wilderness, humor, pushing his limits, and hot tea after a long day of hiking.
  • Masha
    Tour Leader
A child of the plains and marshes, I’ve dreamed of living in the mountains since I was little and used to imagine that the clouds on the horizon were snow-capped peaks.
I’m thrilled by every little spider and leaf, and I try to share that excitement with those around me. For me, nature is my natural habitat :)
I can turn even the most boring walk into an adventure.
“Wait, let me take a picture”—that’s my life motto; I capture all the coolest moments through my lens.
  • Arvidas
    Tour Leader Naturalist
He sees something interesting where most people just walk right by.
He spent his childhood in the semi-deserts of Kazakhstan and the forests of Belarus, and two summers in the tundra beyond the Arctic Circle. For many years now, he has been exploring Georgia’s nature, searching for rare species of plants and animals, pursuing his passion for macro photography, and turning an ordinary hike into a small expedition. If he comes across something unusual along the way, it will most likely become one of the day’s most vivid memories.
